May Day is just around the corner, but there’s still time to help create puppets for the May Day Parade. Join Heart of the Beast artists who will walk you through a giant story board of the parade and guide your creations. Workshops are held Saturdays and Tuesdays from now through May 3. The parade is Sunday, May 6. The theme for the 2012 parade is Transition Towns.
HOTB is also teaming up with Art in the Park to bring puppet and costume making to neighborhood parks. Create a “garden-guardian dragon” at Corcoran and East Phillips Parks and costumes at Peavey Park.
In The Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre has produced the community-created May Day Parade every year since 1975. A themed parade tells a story in sections, each “designed musically and visually . . .as a walking theatrical performance.” A free speech section follows where groups can join in the parade to promote a cause. The parade route follows Bloomington Avenue and culminates in a festival at Powderhorn Park where the story is retold in pageant with giant puppets, dancers and live orchestra. Promoters estimate nearly 50,000 attend the event each year.
