Six year-old Winky and her mother emigrate to The Netherlands from China to join her father, who moved three years prior to open his own restaurant on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
The language barrier is difficult, especially at school. Winky befriends a local pony and unbeknownst to her parents visits him daily. Unfortunately the animal takes ill and her owners must put her down. (This may upset younger viewers.) When Sinterklaas season approaches, Winky perceives her best chance to get her own horse.

Unfortunately for Winky her parents are oblivious to the traditions of the Dutch Santa Claus, and many of Winky’s efforts are foiled. One tradition is leaving your shoe with a carrot inside by the end of your bed. In the morning Sinterklaas replaces the carrot with a small treat. Winky’s father trips over the shoe late in the evening and puts it back in the shoe rack. This not deter Winky in her desire to relay her one wish to Sinterklaas. Recommended for age 7+.
