The ice rink at Langford Park in St. Anthony Park is a glittering winter gem, known both for its lovingly polished surface and its rarity as the site of one of the last remaining recreation center-based hockey programs in the metro area.
Throughout the winter, the rink is maintained by a dedicated corps of neighborhood volunteers armed with brooms, shovels, a couple of snow blowers and a hose do the job of a motorized ice resurfacer (and they do the work with a lot less fanfare than the mighty Zamboni).
The Langford Park Hockey program has a long and strong tradition of managing volunteers and equipment for ice maintenance. Every January, they host the Langford Park Winter Classic, one of the last remaining outdoor hockey tournaments for kids in the metro area. Their information page is at: http://langford.ec2.urbanplanet.com/about_lph.html
The rinks, located on the south end of Langford Park, are an easy after school walk for children from St. Anthony Park Elementary School. The rink and the rec center, which serves as the warming house, are the hub for community activities that take place all winter. The address is 30 Langford Park, Saint Paul, MN 55108. For warming house hours call (651) 298-5765.
