VISUAL ARTS | Fireworks at night as the Walker restores the Whitney Bridge

Work crews have been burning the midnight oil restoring the Walker Art Center’s Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge, which spans Hennepin to connect the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Loring Park. The bridge, designed by local artist Siah Armajani, was built in 1988 and was showing some wear. “The work on the bridge includes nearly fully replacing the wood steps/decking, all of the benches, strengthening expansion joints, and doing some paint touchup,” explained the Walker’s Karen Gysin in an e-mail. These photos were taken at about 1 a.m. Wednesday morning.
