Julie Brown, longtime staff member, working evenings at the Linwood Recreation Center, has passed suddenly on May 5th while on a family trip to Duluth. Many of our readers knew her and felt the very warm, laughing and caring manner in which she served the users of the Linwood Rec Center and its many programs. Her passing is a great and unexpected loss to her family.
SHA and Linwood staff attended her funeral at St. Peter Claver Church on May 11th to pay their respects and celebrate a unique individual who gave so much of herself to her family, friends and the public. She will of course also be greatly missed by her Linwood co-workers who were stunned by the news.
Jim Newman, Julie’s supervisor said, “Julie always welcomed everyone, as they came into Linwood Recreation Center, with a big smile or a reminder that it’s time to sign up for their child’s next activity or an adult program that she thought you or your family might be interested in. Julie will be missed by the Parks and Recreation staff and the Linwood community member who knew her.”
Evening Linwood Rec staff member, John Quesada – who was a close friend – noted that “Julie was the heart and soul of the Center…I still can’t believe she’s gone.”
She will also be very much missed by SHA staff members Jeff Roy and Diane Hilden who worked daily with her and always valued her generous spirit and playful manner. Roy and Hilden remember how Julie would help people in ways not required by her job description. Many SHA Board member knew her from regularly attending monthly meetings at the Center and from their personal connections.
We wish her family the very best in the future and extend our hope that the many good memories they have of Julie as mother, wife, sister and grandmother will help them to heal from this great loss as they move forward.
