Tuya’s Marriage takes viewers on a fascinating journey to some rarely seen reaches of China’s Inner Mongolia.

Tuya is married to Bater, whose physical disabilities prohibit him from working. She takes care of the household, collects water and tends the sheep. When a back injury takes Tuya out of commission, the couple decides to divorce so that she can seek out a new husband to care for them and their two young children. As a series of ill-suited suitors arrives at their door, she is forced to re-evaluate the things that matter most in this unconventional, often comic, love story. Wang, 42, directs with a naturalistic, semi-documentary style that makes the most of the raw spectacu- lar scenery and local folklife. Winner of two major awards at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival, including the coveted Golden Bear.
