NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Traffic That Stops Traffic: Street Rods at the Fair Grounds this Weekend

Print

There will be a lot of traffic—the souped-up and nostalgic kind– in the neighborhoods surrounding the State Fair grounds, June 17—19, when The Minnesota Street Rod Association’s (MSRA) Back to the 50’s Weekend event takes place. Hot rod spotters may glimpse a 1958 Pontiac Starchief cruising Larpenteur or a ’51 Ford Woodie zipping along Cleveland or even a ‘34 2-door Ford Sedan, painted lemon yellow, rolling along Como Avenue.

The 38th annual Back to the 50’s Weekend has grown to be a big event. According to the MSRA, “It is the second largest car show of its kind in the world … second only to the National Street Rod Association’s “Street Rod Nationals.” Over 100,000 spectators are expected this year to view “more than 11,000 street rods, customs, classics and restored vehicles, all dating from 1964 and earlier.” The fair grounds will be busy with more than 350 vendors and exhibits, including live music and a big Swap Meet on Sunday, 6 a.m. -1 p.m., in the Midway area.

The event is open Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m.–10 p.m. and Sunday 6 a.m.–3 p.m.
