When Maggie Turner, owner of Tillie’s Bean coffee house, opened her mail October 16, there was a surprise waiting. It was a cease-and-desist order from the city of Minneapolis, saying: ‘During a drive-by inspection a billboard advertising live music was found. This is not permissible under the license you possess.’

Minnesota 2020 continues to examine K-12 education levy requests. On Oct. 12, we reported on the state’s inadequate investment in schools that led to 101 levy requests this year. On Oct. 22, we reported on the effect of levy requests on Twin Cities schools. Today, we look at several districts asking voters for levies for the first time. On Friday, Oct. 26, we profiled a district that needs more money but knows voters won’t support a levy increase.

Organizers expect more than 600 people from the five-state area to attend the second annual Northland Bioneers Conference at St. Paul’s United Auto Workers Ford Training Center on November 2-4. The conference will feature more than 30 workshops on issues such as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, sustainable agriculture, crafting messages for making change, and empowering multicultural youth leaders.

Brighton Development has decided to bag plans for a condo project on the riverfront, but the city is planning to put the block back on the market to seek out other redevelopment opportunities.

Plans to merge the Minneapolis Public Library (MPL) into the Hennepin County library system — including the reopening of Southeast Library — are moving ahead. The Minneapolis City Council and Library Board have tentatively set Nov. 7 for a joint public hearing on consolidation. The place and time have yet to be announced.

That’s a sensational headline for a strange but not really occult occurrence. I couldn’t seem to find a way to write about it until now, but let’s see if today, the fifth anniversary of the tragedy, gives me the opening I need to work through how a post-mortem message from Sen. Paul Wellstone helped me escape from the so-called mainstream media.
