The University of St. Thomas has just announced that Guthrie Theater artistic director Joe Dowling will deliver the commencement address at the university’s baccalaureate ceremonies on May 23—even as the university’s Foley Theater is readied for destruction. The building containing the Foley Theater is currently being stripped of asbestos, says St. Thomas spokesman Jim Winterer, and is scheduled to come down very soon after graduation. Simultaneously, as previously reported, the university is closing its theater department. Asked about the seeming irony of Dowling’s selection as graduation speaker, Winterer had no comment.
