Eden Prairie-based Supervalu is going into the natural and organic foods market.

The company, which runs the Cub and Save-A-Lot Stores, announced it will launch Sunflower Market, described as a “value-priced organic foods retail outlet.” The new stores will provide a wide range of organic foods, including meats and bakery items, the company says.

The first Sunflower Market is scheduled to open in Indianapolis in January 2006.

Supervalu says the new concept is a response to the rapidly growing market for natural and organic foods in the U.S. Sales of organic products have been growing exponentially over the past years and are expected to reach more than $32 billion by 2009.

According to Supervalu’s research, 96 percent of consumers use fresh organic produce at least occasionally. However, in many grocery stores, organic foods are more expensive than “regular” food.

Supervalu says the new Sunflower Markets will offer organic products at “affordable” prices.
