A University student was killed Thursday morning while riding her bicycle, police said.

The 20-year-old woman, believed to be an international student, died after being hit by a pickup truck at University and Washington Avenues SE at 6:41 a.m., said Greg Reinhardt, the Minneapolis Police Department’s public information officer.

“We were initially called to the scene to a hit and run,” Reinhardt said.

“When officers arrived the driver had returned to the scene.”

The woman was not wearing a helmet, and early-morning rain was thought to be a factor in the accident, Reinhardt said.

The release of the woman’s name is pending notification of her family, who may be difficult to contact if she is in fact an international student, Reinhardt said. The driver has been released, Reinhardt said.
