The TC Daily Planet has been following the story of Rosemary Williams’ foreclosure and eviction for months. Today may be the final act, as organizers say they expect police to come and evict and/or arrest everyone who is occupying the house.
Sheila’s phone message and my text message crossed paths around 11 a.m. – the word was out that something was happening at Rosemary Williams’ house today, and Sheila was on her way. We don’t have the final story yet, but here’s part of the “story behind the story” as Sheila reports from the scene.
About 50 people gathered at the house, waiting to see what happens next. Some are committed to sitting in and resisting eviction. Someone says that if you want to avoid arrest, you should stay out of the house. But Rosemary is cooking lunch, and the kitchen is a tempting spot.
Lots of reporters are here, and it’s anybody’s guess when or if the cops will show up. According to the press release from the Poor People’s Campaign:
This morning GMAC contacted Rosemary Williams’s attorney. GMAC offered her $5000 to be quiet, stop activity to save her house, and go away. Ms. Williams said no. She would not take their “30 pieces of silver” when justice was on the line.
The Uptake talked to Rosemary Williams this morning. Their video is here.
Sheila by text message at 1:44 p.m. – Sisters of Camelot arrive with food for everyone.
Sheila has passed around a notebook, for people’s comments:
I’m very proud of being a part of a growing movement to help people in foreclosure, and of course justice for rosemary williams. Gmac give it back!!
the time for revolution is now!
rosemary, is I believe, one of the greatest examples to make public, and call to attention the need to fight for a right to shelter. I’ve been honored to stay in her home and fight beside. This will always be rosemary’s house
