REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | Is hitchhiking making a comeback?

Print

With the economy deep in recession and transportation costs rising, is hitchhiking making a comeback? I’ve encountered hitchhikers everywhere from Madeline Island to Uptown, and my brother tells me that when he recently attended the Rothbury Festival in Michigan, he noticed that a large number of concertgoers were arriving (and leaving) in other people’s cars. Has this been your experience as well? Have you, or has anyone you know, recently resorted to hitchhiking as a means of transportation? Are there ways to safely hitchhike, or to give a hitchhiker a ride? Leave a comment below, or e-mail jay@tcdailyplanet.net.
