Party in the street with Pizza Luce

Pizza party on August 11.

As summer begins to wind down (even though true Minnesotans know that the heat and humidity will last well into September), so do outdoor block parties and festivals. Never fear however, because Pizza Luce’s annual block party has yet to occur, and the annual event never fails to keep summer going strong in August. Bringing out the best of the best in local music, the event also brings out the best of the best in people watching. Uptown’s finest traditionally show up for this music-centric block party, making it a great opportunity to take in the many faces of Minneapolis.

This year’s event, on August 11 from noon to 10 p.m. at 3200 Lyndale Avenue South, features another impressive line-up of local musicians to satisfy hipsters, hippies and hip-hoppers alike. Mictlan, Cecil Otter and Dessa from hip-hop collective Doomtree bring their punk- and spoken-word influences to the stage, while punk-informed rockers Chooglin’ along with back-up The Horns of Eleganza will treat the audience to their unique blend of rock and R&B styles. The sultry stylings of Black Blondie will bring the sex back to the stage and The Alarmists will hit the stage with their infectious and impressive guitar-based rock hooks. City Pages “Best Rock Group of 2007” winners Little Man will bring their award-winning jams as well. Other acts include Brother and Sister, The Dialones, The Jacobins, The 2nd Hand Ska Kings and others to be announced. Drinking with Ian’s ringleader Ian will be the event’s emcee.

As always the event is free. Family friendly activities such as a dunk tank and face painting will be included in the musical fun for the first few hours of the day. Come hungry, because there will be enough pizza for sale to feed, well, everyone in Uptown. For those who aren’t the pizza-loving types, there will also be brats and veggie brats on the menu. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be flowing for a fee as well. And if it rains, plan to bring your umbrella or poncho, because this event is happening rain or shine. Nothing can stop the Luce-loving faithful from partying in the street.
