If you were in the East Hennepin/University Avenue area on Monday, you might have noticed that workers were busy fixing up the old Union Bar space on East Hennepin across from the Wilde Roast Café. Turns out it’s the new campaign headquarters for Fifth District congressional candidate, First Ward City Councilmember, Northeast resident, and Marcy Open School parent Paul Ostrow.
Ostrow has decided to run for the DFL nomination in the September primary, against the endorsed candidate, state Rep. Keith Ellison. Former state Sen. Ember Reichgott Junge has also announced that she will run in the primary, and Mike Erlandson, aide to retiring U.S. Rep. Martin Sabo and former DFL party chair, is expected to decide in the next few days whether to run in the primary. Interestingly, both Ostrow and Junge are St. Olaf College grads with political science majors.
Ostrow said workers have been busy cleaning graffiti off of the long vacant storefront space and that he was glad the campaign could play a part in helping to fix up that blighted section of E. Hennepin Avenue.
