Cedar Avenue fire benefit concert raised $12,839
We're pleased to announce that the benefit concert Friday night raised $12,839 for the victims and families of the New Year's Day fire. Over 500 people attended.
On behalf of our co-sponsor partners Augsburg College and The Cedar Cultural Center, KFAI would like to thank all involved for their generous donations. Summit and Harriet Brewing graciously donated beer to the event, the proceeds of which also went to the disaster relief fund.
The concert celebrated the rich cultural makeup of The West Bank neighborhood and its strength as a musical hub in the Twin Cities. One of the more touching moments happened when West Bank folk pioneer, Spider John Koerner greeted those in attendance in both English and Somali.
The spirit of neighborhood unity was illustrated with a lively collaboration between the Augsburg JIVE student ensemble and Somali artists Dalmar and Hodan from the group Waayaha Cusub.
Additionally, a number of organizations pledged support and will be making their donations directly to the ‘Cedar-Riverside Fire Disaster Relief Fund’ through Pillsbury United Communities. Those organizations include Summit Academy, Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, AfroDeli, and CHANCE (U of MN).
Special thanks go out to all the musicians who performed at the concert: Martin Devaney, Spider John Koerner, Phil Heywood, The Cactus Blossoms, DJ Go Getta,
SYAV Dancers, Jon Rodine, Southside Desire, Augsburg JIVE, Waayaha Cusub, and The Brass Messengers.
Additional donations are still being accepted at Cedar-Riverside Fire Disaster Relief Fund. Note “Cedar-Riverside Disaster Relief Fund” in the Comments section.
