For awhile, you could imagine Beijing today as the Paris of the Jazz Age for ex-pats. As the SARS scare leaves the streets of Beijing deserted, a documentary fi lmmaker from Manila discovers the world of “Neo-Lounge,” one of the few bars that remained open.
Drawn to the Neo-Lounge are the high-spirited foreigners, where they came from or where they were going nobody cared, but they all seemed to be living by their own rules and most appear to be pursuing the life they have always wanted. Call it decadent, but it was the place to be as you follow them with Ms. Arong’s restless lens through the “new China” cosmopolitan capital. Main characters are a Bulgarian jazz singer after she lands her fi rst gig during the 2003 epidemic and a larger-than-life Italian businessman whose parties never seem to cease in the glittering center of unpredictable Beijing.
