The first two annual events deserve our attention! They are featured in your Community Reporter and exemplify what makes our community special–people who do so much, and homes and gardens that are so much.

Wednesday June 12: West Seventh Community Service Awards

6 – 9 p.m., Mancini’s. RSVP before tomorrow! Tickets $28/$5 deductible. Celebrate three neighbors, Lori Harris, Becky Yust, and John Yust who have done so much to “foster a better community, a more beautiful community and a more open and welcoming community for long-time residents and newcomers alike. Saturday June 15 West End Garden Tour! Come one, come all! Visit one; visit all!

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.: sixteen gardens in the West End will be open from art garden, to bee garden, to “critter hunts” within a formal garden, the family-friendly free garden tour offers children, young and old, a variety of opportunities to explore what it means to garden. For the history-minded, both Lauer Flats and the Henry Lauer home will open their hidden formal gardens to view. The free tour is presented by the Fort Road Federation and the West End Gardeners. Tour Map and Guide Booklets are available at Highland Nursery, Mississippi Market, CUB Foods/West Saint Paul and Gerten’s/Inver Grove Heights. On the day of the tour at Mancini’s Char House, West 7th / Fort Road Federation, and at Mississippi Market on West 7th Street. Current tour maps and slideshows of previous years’ tours can be found at www.fortroadfederation.org/garden/. A plant sale will be held at the West 7th/Fort Road Federation parking lot. Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

June 10 – 14: Sixteenth annual Sokol MN Cultural Day Camp

Czech and Slovak Sokol MN has a tradition of supporting educational, cultural, social, and athletic activities. This year, we are offering our sixteenth day camp. Our program provides campers with the opportunity to learn about Czech and Slovak heritages. It fosters personal growth through cultural enrichment and social and recreational activities. 9:45-10:30 am. Abrakadoodle “Friday Fun Days” art class for children ages 2-5 together with a parent or caregiver. We will paint seahorses, sculpt funny fish, paint with sand and collage a cool summer picture. (Min. clss size, 6 children; max. class size, 12 children). Thursday, June 6: Enhancement Coalition monthly meeting

11 a.m. at Mancini’s: Agenda includes garden tour, summer events, Island Station, Festa Italiana Minnesota. Enhancement Coalition is a comprised of West Seventh Business Association and neighborhood residents: all are invited to assist.

Tuesday, June 11: Stories from the Levee

5:30-7:00 Please join us for an evening of storytelling and reminiscing about the Upper Levee. The Upper Levee community, below the High Bridge was commonly referred to as “Little Italy”. This community of Italian immigrants made the Levee their home from the 1900’s to 1950’s. The housing in the area was eventually condemned due to constant flooding. We will have some local historians on hand, but bring your stories or your parents or your grandparents stories from the Levee! Call the center to register. Monday, June 17: Introduction to Medicare: An Overview

6:00-7:30 Are you new to Medicare or will you be enrolling soon? Perhaps you are helping a family member to sign up? This presentation is a great starting point! We will review what is covered by Parts A, B, C and D of Medicare, as well as Medicare supplement options available, enrollment process and personal costs. Additionally, the presentation will address the donut hole and eligibility for extra help with prescription drug costs. No Charge, Register by June 11. New! West 7th Senior Program is launching its Caregiving Program.

The following programs will be available to caregivers. Our caregiver program is staffed by trained Social Workers, Geriatric Care Managers and Experienced Respite Staff. Our goal is to assist you in your caregiver role by providing: Caregiver Book Club for Adult Children, Caregiver Support Group for Spouse/Partner, Respite Services, Family Consultations, Caregiver Consultations.
