St. George Greek Festival – August 20 & 21, 2011

If you love great food and drink and like to sample fabulous ethnic pastries, then don’t miss the 2011 St. George Greek Festival held on the St. George church grounds at 1111 Summit Avenue. The Festival will be Sat., August 20th, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sun., August 21st, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission is FREE!

Other activities include: The annual Bake Sale, Bazaar, and for the kids – face painting, games and a Moon Walk. The Greek Dancers of Minnesota who will perform a variety of folk dances from all over Mainland Greece, the Greek Islands and Cyprus. Additionally, there will be hourly church tours to learn about the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church – the oldest Christian church in the world. St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church – A New Rector

The Rev. Jered Weber-Johnson celebrates and preaches at his first service with the St. John’s congregation on July 17, 2011.  On Thursday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m. he will be officially installed as Rector by Bishop Brian Prior at a festive service followed by a reception.  St. John’s church is located at the corner of Portland and Kent streets.

St. Paul Nice Ride Station Installation Begins June 20

Nice Ride Minnesota is a non-profit corporation providing a public bike sharing system in the Twin Cities. 

Nice Ride began installing new bike-share stations the night of Monday June 20th. These installations mark the beginning of Nice Ride’s expansion into St. Paul. Four of these new stations will be in St. Paul. Four additional stations will be also be installed in Minneapolis.

Bike sharing is designed for short trips in urban areas. Nice Ride stations are generally open from April to November, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  To use the bikes, users purchase a subscription.  Subscriptions are available on a daily, monthly, and annual basis.  With a subscription, users can check out a bike, take a bike for a short ride, and return it at any station.  Trips longer than 30 minutes are subject to trip fees.

The new stations will be located at:

  • 27th Avenue between the Franklin Bridge and the I94 Bridge

  • University Avenue at 29th Avenue (near the Overflow Cafe and M-Flats)

  • Territorial Road at Westgate Drive (near the KSTP tower, Dunn Bros. coffee shop, and Metro Lofts)

  • Raymond Avenue at Ellis Avenue (near Baker Court and Keys Cafe)

  • Fairview Avenue at University (near the Griggs Morgan building and 2nd Debut)

  • Snelling and Sherburne Avenues (between CVS Pharmacy and Checkerboard Pizza)

  • Lake Street at 21st Avenue (at the YWCA near the Hiawatha light rail station)

  • Lake Street at 39th Avenue (near the Blue Moon coffee shop and Ace Hardware)

MN Reading Corps Seeks Summit Hill Residents

Minnesota Reading Corps is looking for Summit Hill area residents to serve as tutors during the 2011-2012 school year at Linwood Monroe Arts Plus, as well as Maxfield Magnet Elementary and Four Seasons A+ Elementary. Using research-based techniques, Reading Corps members provide one-on-one literacy tutoring to children from age 3 through third grade who cannot read at their grade level. Tutors are asked to commit to 11 months of service starting with in-depth training in August. In exchange, tutors earn an education award, living stipend and other benefits.
