On March 27, Mujeres en Accion group leader, Silvia Perez, along with other leaders in the Mujeres en Accion group met with Mayor Rybak to be honored for their commitment to the neighborhood and engagement with the city. Additionally, they were presented with a proclamation declaring March 27, 2013, to be Mujeres en Accion y Poder Day.
Full Proclamation from Mayor Rybak:
WHEREAS, south Minneapolis has a large and rapidly growing Latina/o population; and
WHEREAS, immigrants face a harsh context of reception in the United States and significant barriers to civic participation, despite the robust civic life enjoyed by Minneapolis residents generally; and
WHEREAS, Mujeres en Acción y Poder, a program of the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization, overcomes barriers to civic participation and opens pathways for Latinas and their families to participate fully in the life and leadership of the Powderhorn Park, Corcoran, and Standish neighborhoods and to improve their own quality of life; and
WHEREAS, Mujeres en Acción y Poder builds skills, knowledge, and community through participant-driven activities, while its Lideres en Acción y Poder curriculum develops individual and group leadership skills and places graduates in leadership positions; and
WHEREAS, program founder Silvia Perez and volunteer leaders draw over 100 new Latinas to Mujeres en Acción y Poder activities each year, building stronger neighborhoods for all residents.
NOW THEREFORE, I, R.T. RYBAK, Mayor of the City of Minneapolis, do hereby proclaim March 27, 2013, to be:
MUJERES EN ACCIÓN Y PODER DAY IN THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS
