CNO’s Mujeres en Acción y Poder (MAP) program recently celebrated the conclusion of its 2012-2013 program year with a graduation ceremony held at Powerhorn Park on Saturday, May 25th. Approximately 200 members of the community, families of participants, and local leaders attended the event to mark the achievements of these individuals. Fourteen graduates from the Mujeres en Acción y Poder program were recognized as well as fifteen graduates from Líderes en Acción y Poder (LAP). Community Organizer Silvia Pérez Sánchez served as master of ceremonies, joined by Cesar Orjuela from Latino Communities United in Service (known by its Spanish acronym, CLUES) and Claudia Fuentes, Policy Aide for the Minneapolis Mayor’s Office. Silvia received an award of recognition for her work with MAP and LAP collaboratively presented by the City of Minneapolis and CLUES.

CNO’s Mujeres en Accion y Poder (MAP) women’s empowerment program brings Latinas into the life and leadership of the neighborhood through participant-driven activities that build skills, knowledge, and community. The foundation of the program is person-to-person outreach including door-knocking at homes of prospective participants, conducted and led by native Spanish speakers who share the immigrant experience and live in the neighborhood.

Graduates of MAP are also invited to engage further in Lideres en Accion y Poder (LAP), a one-year, participant-driven curriculum that develops individual and group leadership skills and places graduates in leadership positions such as community gardens, nonprofit action committees and boards, or an outreach position with MAP, the farmers market, or the park. In this way, MAP and LAP participation builds marketable skills in addition to social capital and community benefits.
