Looking for a job? Your local library might be able to help. The Minneapolis Central Library offers a Job Search Assistance program on Wednesdays from 1:00-4:30 p.m. with Goodwill Easter Seals employment counselors. The library started with the service in October 2006 and Workforce Solutions funds Goodwill Easter Seals for the sessions.
“We have had a lot of job seekers come into the library already and we wanted counselors who can give that career advice,” said Mary Linden, librarian. “Our mission is to help people in the community for what they need to know in order to be successful and reach their goals.”
Job seekers can walk in and sign up for a 15-minute time slot for a one-on-one session with a Goodwill Easter Seals counselor to discuss topics such as career counseling, job leads, skills training, placement, support and career advancement. The job seeker and counselor can then schedule future appointments at one of the Goodwill Easter Seals service locations. All sessions are confidential.
Kevin Corcoran, an employment consultant and trainer with Goodwill Easter Seals, said that one of the biggest mistakes job seekers do is not being prepared to look for a job.
“Employment is not just about getting a job, it’s about preparing for a job,” he said. “In this new economy, you have to be more prepared and have a plan to give the employer exactly what they are looking for.”
Corcoran said he has seen a variety of people of different ages from ages 18 to 75 and career backgrounds such as engineers and lawyers.
“Whatever you need help with to get a job, we are going to try and help you,” he said.
The Minneapolis Central Library is located at 300 Nicollet Mall. Their number is 952-847-8000.
