Not since the 1930’s have America’s food safety regulations undergone such fundamental changes. The Food Safety and Modernization Act requires greater accountability and stringent record keeping, with an emphasis on preventing food-borne illnesses. The law enables the FDA to enforce a recall on suspected contaminated food, which had previously been voluntary.
Economically, the new food safety regulations can be seen as a good thing for Minnesota, especially as it exports food products to other states. Standardized, digital data collection will create greater accountability in tracing contamination to it’s source, and enhance consumer confidence.
We talked with Minnesota Department of Agriculture food safety manager Ben Miller about the impacts here in Minnesota.
