A fourth lane in each direction will be added to I-94 between Downtown and Highway 280, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced on Wednesday. The temporary lanes will increase capacity and ease congestion following the collapse of the I-35W bridge.

The work will begin Friday night, August 17, weather permitting.

Though the project is still being designed, MnDOT said in a statement that it hoped to have it completed in the next few weeks.

The new capacity will be created by resurfacing, restriping and use of shoulder areas.
