When you think “great architecture,” you probably think of the Weisman or the Walker or the Guthrie—but architecture is about what’s inside as well, and the Lagoon Cinema is a quietly wonderful example of elegant design. Tall windows opposite the snack counter face onto bustling Lagoon Avenue, the theaters feature distinctive tree-like light elements with sculpted waves echoing the venue’s name (it was originally the name of a theater that stood where the Uptown Theatre is now), and a long mezzanine makes even a trip to the bathroom an occasion for urban glamour. It’s a great place to take a date, and if you want to make an evening of it, Monday is Cheap Date Night just down the street at the Bryant-Lake Bowl.
