Interview: Sandy Spieler on the May Day festival

Sandy Spieler is a founding member of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, and has been its Artistic Director since 1976. Her creative imprint can be found in most of Heart of the Beast’s artistically and socially engaging mainstage productions, and of course, in their springtime community ritual, The Annual May Day Parade and Festival.

Sandy recently attained a MA in Cultural Performance from the University of Bristol, England, as part of her studies that were supported by a Bush Foundation Leadership Fellows award. She has also received numerous fellowships from the McKnight Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Jerome Foundation. Sandy receives requests for commissioned work from organizations and arts patrons throughout the world.
