Whether you consider yourself artistic or not, you can be part of a great community art project that will improve the neighborhood’s appearance and provide a way for people of all generations to work together. Southwest Senior Center is looking for neighborhood residents who would like to help build a 100 square foot mosaic that will be installed on an exterior wall at Bryant Avenue Market at 32nd and Bryant. The project kicks off with a neighborhood brainstorming session to help determine the focus and theme of the mosaic on Tuesday, August 23 at 7 p.m. at the Center and a building workshop on Saturday, September 17 at 9 a.m..
Sharra Frank, a local mosaic artist, will create the design based on community input and will then outline the mural on mesh. Volunteers will work together at the building workshops to fill in the design with mosaic tile piece. These will then be assembled and adhered to the side of the building by the artist.
The Center is encouraging community members of all ages to take part in this project by helping to design and build the mural. It is a unique opportunity to participate in an intergenerational art project that will improve the neighborhood. Participants can come as often as they are able and should feel free to bring friends, family members, neighbors, children and grandchildren to the workshops. This project is funded by a grant from the City of Minneapolis through its Innovative Graffiti Prevention Micro-Grant, CARAG, and Volunteers of America-Minnesota. Workshops take place at the Center at 3612 Bryant Avenue S. To receive a complete schedule of the workshops or for more information, contact Mary Ann Schoenberger at 61.822.3194 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
