Following your dream wherever it leads and before it’s too late is what the vocational counselors traditionally advise college students, but giving up a brilliant medical practice at 35 to form a rock band in this day and age? This is the premise of this pleasant un-Hollywood tale from the sons and daughters of several French New Wave film personalities.
If You Love Me Follow Me (Qui m’aime me suive) tells the story of 35-year-old Maxime, a brilliant doctor, who leads an orderly life surrounded by his lawyer wife but admired by his friends and his happy family. But, one day he meets Chine, a singer (co-scripter Eleanore Pourriat) , and receives the shock everyone close to him has always dreaded. Max decides to chuck his career and start up a rock group, fulfi lling at last a youth dream. He drags everyone else into his madcap escapade; his decisions affect all their lives. Matthieu Demy (son of Agnes Varda, Jacques Demy) carries the day as Max, with Romane Bohringer, as his wife, and Julie Depardieu, part of the rock band group. Director Cohen, 38, based his story on an actual case. which could work, if the music is good enough to suggest Max has a chance, as it is here.
