From Farmington Elementary School early this year to Meadow View School this month, local African Dance Company is performing a World Class dance performances at local schools and decided to give away all the proceeds, 100%, to these schools.
The schools in turn will use these money to buy necessary material for their music classes. “This is one way Kofi is giving back to the community” told African News Journal by Matt Damon, spokesperson for the band.
“When people think of Francis Kofi they think of tradition, and he has kept his Hayor Bibimma Dance Company’s tradition alive again this year by performing a benefit concert for area schools in order to raise funds to purchase musical instruments for students.”
Early this year, February 9th Mr. Francis Kofi and his company members brought their music, tradition and movement to the people of Farmington where at the Boeckman Middle School they delivered a full length performance filled with live drumming, traditional dance and crowd gratifying entertainment. The night was a resounding success as thousands of dollars were raised, guaranteeing that future generations of students in the area will be able to learn new instruments and therefore be inspired to participate in the arts.
The dancers hope their success at Farmington will duplicate here at Meadow View when they perform on April 9 and also present 26 drums that were bought with the fundraiser money. The drums will be used in the music programs.
Francis Kofi a world renowned dancer and drummer has studied music and dance throughout West Africa and was the founder and Artistic Director of the National Dance Company of Ghana. Today he resides in Minneapolis and continues his teaching and performing for audiences throughout the United States with The Hayor Bibimma Dance Company.
The passion Francis has for teaching youth and giving back to those who support him prompted him to donate some of his dance company’s time each year to local schools for this important cause. “Giving back to the community is essential for me, I have dedicated so much of my career to students and this is the most rewarding part of what I do” said Kofi
“Kofi and Hayor Bibimma presented a great show, which raised money for us and we are grateful to them” said Doris McNamara , Music Specialist at Farmington Elementary School, while speaking to the African News Journal from her office.
