A new fund — the Minnesota Helps–Bridge Disaster Fund — has been created to pool financial resources for the I-35W bridge disaster relief efforts.

The fund is a collaborative effort of The Minneapolis Foundation, Minnesota Community Foundation, The St. Paul Foundation and the Greater Twin Cities United Way. The Northwest Area Foundation and the McKnight Foundation are also supporting the fund.

Financial contributions to the fund will be pooled and then distributed by the sponsoring organizations to nonprofits that are assisting those “most affected by the tragedy,” according to a release by the participating foundations.

“The collapse of the I-35W bridge spanning the Mississippi River is a shocking reminder of the fragility of life and how an ordinary, daily routine can turn into tragedy and heartbreak. This disaster, however, also illuminates the generous human impulse to want to help those who have suffered loss,” read a statement issued by the foundations.

One hundred percent of the donations will be redistributed for relief efforts going on now and in the coming months.
