Common Core, state standards, Focused Instruction, Aligned Learning — a plethora of initiatives and directions come from local, state, and national sources in what is either an effort to help teachers be more effective (the administrative view) or an intolerable, multi-faceted burden that imposes more requirements and paperwork to be completed in time that could otherwise be devoted to teaching (in the view of many teachers.) Sure — schools and teachers need to focus on effective teaching, but how do these intiatives work, and which is useful to teachers and students?
