Among my acquaintances, it’s been a subject of persistent curiosity and amusement that I actually have an aunt Muffie. Yes, it’s true. Her family gave her that nickname when she was a baby, and now it’s on her business cards as a VP at Wells Fargo. Now listen, people! It’s time to do Aunt Muffie—and Minneapolis—a solid.
Muffie’s son, my cousin David Jaimes (above), is a member of a skateboard crew sponsored by Familia Skateshop in Uptown. The crew have been gaining notice in an international video surf/skate/BMX competition being run on Facebook by Nike, and they’re hoping to advance through the next two rounds to win a trip to Barcelona, and international glory for themselves and the whole Twin Cities skate scene, by “living the life of a Nike pro.” The competition is about skills, but the bottom line is “style, creativity, and camaraderie.”
I know, I know, blah blah, yeah yeah, commercial this, promotional that, I know. But look! These guys have a serious shot at this, so go to Facebook and show them some Like love. Big Brother Nike is watching, and if the Familia crew brings this trophy home, we’ll all have something to blog about.
