Event Details
In many literary and academic circles, rap is regarded as simple music, rather a complex art form worthy of study. This class will expand the definition of poetry as well as explore the ways hip-hop has contributed and drawn from the literary genre. We’ll examine the poetic elements of hip-hop through listening to both legendary and little known rap songs in addition to poems well-versed in the hip-hop canon. Participants will also write raps or poems inspired by the work we’ll encounter. This class will travel the globe by way of breakbeats and knowledge drawn from The Fugees, Immortal Technique, K’Naan, M.I.A., and others. All levels welcome!
