The Free Black Table is a free of charge all ages open mic, hosted by poet, educator and activist Keno Evol. Serving 500+ multi-generational artists as a free-of-charge all-ages open mic dedicated to the writings of black artists and people of color. The public is welcomed to attend though the sign up sheet is exclusively reserved for black or p.o.c identified artists. Sign up begins at 6:30p it is suggested performers arrive early as sign up goes quickly. Nina Simone said “Freedom to me, is no fear” Come get free as we uplift and celebrate these phenomenal artists.
The Social Hour 5-7p p is a component of The Free Black Table. It is a catered event, where free food and drinks are provided in the lobby of theillusion theater. The Social Hour serves as a place for artists and community to reflect, network, build and kick it.
The Free Black Table Open Mic is an unprecedented space that is filling a void in its ability to offer artistic space with The Market, The Open Mic and The Social Hour. The Free Black Table Open Mic has been a catalyst to shift the culture of how we as community engage in the literary arts.
The Free Black is centered and dedicated to poets resisting, loving, and spitting out loud through poetry and performance art. The Free Black Table audience is intergenerational with elders in attendance as well as high school students and all ages in between. As it evolves new and different groups of artists will be invited to participate and a diverse range of community topics will be explored
