Event Details

American Civic Forum is excited to announce free monthly discussions about politics, activism, art and artists at Phoenix Theater in Minneapolis.

After the 2016 presidential election, there has been a renewed—and urgent—political mobilization. Our series, The Artist as Citizen, goes deep with what we, as artists, can we do to influence politics in Washington, at the state capitol, in city hall, and among our fellow citizens. Artists have the capacity to bring our compatriots together around art—and action.

What does that art look like? How do we use our skills to create change? What’s the best way of going about accomplishing all this?

In April we’ll be discussing:
As artists, we’re often told “don’t preach to the choir”—but doesn’t the choir need to hear a good sermon sometimes? Why do we shy away from making art with rousing, explicit political messages? And why do we consider audience interpretation more valid than artists’ intent?

Check back here for more information about panelists, resources and ideas for advance reading on each subject.
