Barry Jenkins recently said, “Art is inherently political. Once we make the work and release it into the world, it’s beyond our control.”
His film Moonlight, like many works of art imitate life and the social issues we face today. Art evokes emotion and subjective interpretation of political issues in ways that the mainstream news and media no longer does. For that reason, we must continue to create art that challenges everything, and leads everyone to think deeply about the current state of our world.
The Art of Resistance is a monthly community gathering for creation, dialogue and justice. Each month we will feature various works from local artists, facilitate discussion and build our resistance through art.
The kick off event will include a full day of art and a panel with three incredibly talented artists in
Ricardo Levins Morales, Andrea Jenkins and D.A. Bullock.
The schedule for the day will be:
3pm-5pm: Gallery opens to the public. Visual art of resistance will be featured in the gallery in addition to photographs from Wing Young Huie.
5pm-6pm: Visual media, film, and projection art screenings.
6pm-7pm: Spoken word, essay reading and other performance work.
7pm-8:30pm: Panel on The Art of Resistance
Ricardo Levins Morales visual, Andrea Jenkins written and D.A. Bullock film.
We will have a moderated conversation about their respective mediums followed by breakouts in each of the 3 areas of visual art, written work and film. The breakouts will allow space for deeper dialogue around collaboration outside of the event.
8:30pm: Live music, DJ’s and live visuals to be announced.
If you would like to submit work please email a photo to Ryan at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are accepting all mediums of art with the criteria that the work represents your interpretation of the art of resistance. The deadline for submissions is 2/24 at 10am.
The final curation and music lineup will be announced 2/25.
