Over the past two months, MN poets between the ages of 13 and 19 have taken the initiative to show up, speak out, and be heard. Through a series of five preliminary bouts, youth from all over the state have shared their original poetry and built community with one another. Panels of judges have also scored the poems (based on content, craft, performance, originality, and more), narrowing down the poets to a top 32.
After two semifinals bouts (March 10 at the Loft Literary Center and March 17 at Macalester College), the top 12 poets will share the stage on March 31 at Saint Paul’s SteppingStone Theatre for FINALS, where the six highest-scoring youth poets in Minnesota will form a cohort that will represent the state at the annual international Brave New Voices youth poetry slam festival in July 2018 in Houston, Texas.
That cohort will also receive mentorship in writing, performing, and arts leadership, sharpening their craft through an intensive spring/summer arts experience. Find more information on TruArtSpeaks and Be Heard at www.TruArtSpeaks.org.
