Event Details
MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Local dance company Deborah Jinza Thayer | Movement Architecture premieres its latest work, All Hail the Queen, a dance-installation exploring the vagina, the voice and womxn’s creative expression, this October 10-14, 2018 at the Illusion Theater in downtown Minneapolis. Tickets available at http://www.illusiontheater.
All Hail the Queen explores the historically censored anatomies of womxn, looking at the similarities between the vocal apparatus and the pelvic apparatus: the voice and the vagina. Instead of literally displaying the vagina, as some theater pieces have done, All Hail the Queen uses movement, text, humor, and set design to guide the audience through various cultural, historical and embodied experiences of “the female body.”
All Hail the Queen is a collaboration between Choreographer Deborah Jinza Thayer, Melissa Birch (Text), Janika Vandervelde (Music), Amelia Biewald (Installation), and Dancers Julia Davidson, Non Edwards, Erika Hansen, Christine Maginnis, Sharon Picasso, Eve Schulte, Erin Thompson, and Roxane Wallace. Rounding out the production team are Ivan Idland (Costumes), Mary Plaster (Puppet) and Karin Olson (Lighting Design).
All Hail the Queen is a dance installation—an immersive, built environment—through which the audience travels to experience movement, sound, text and visual art. The audience will see dance at a close range, feel their way through a fabric tunnel, and hear expressions of laryngeal glee; All Hail the Queen creates an artistic space designed to fully engage the audience’s perspective and senses.
All Hail the Queen will inspire and continue conversations about how womxn’s bodies, bodies with vaginas and womxn’s creative voices are treated in today’s culture. By inviting womxn artists to collaborate, offering their own ideas and experiences around “the female body,” All Hail the Queencounters devaluation and dismissal of womxn’s bodies with celebratory and expressive artistry.
