Event Details

Mapping Prejudice is working to illuminate the invisible. And we need your help.

We are working to create the first-of-its-kind map of racial covenants for an American city. Racial covenants are legal codicils that were embedded into property deeds during the first half of the twentieth century. Their purpose was to bar people who were not white from buying or even occupying the parcels of land to which they were attached.

We are relying on community volunteers to help us document the history of these discriminatory deeds. Join us for a work session on June 13th. We’ll read covenants together and extract the data we need to put them on a map.

Our goal is to answer some questions critical to our contemporary efforts to confront yawning racial disparities:
How much land was covered by racial restrictions in Minneapolis?
What neighborhoods were off limits to people who were not white?
How have covenants influenced contemporary demographic patterns?
What groups were seen as the biggest threat to neighborhood stability and property values?

What do we do next?
Please bring a laptop. For more information about Mapping Prejudice and our map, please look at our website: https://www.mappingprejudice.org/get-involved/

This is a work session. This means that the Mapping Prejudice team will not be doing any kind of formal presentation. Instead, this is an opportunity to contribute to our map of racially-restrictive deeds. Between 5 and 7 pm, we will be working with folks who want to read covenants and extract the data we need to put these restrictions on a map of Minneapolis.

If you would like to participate, please bring a laptop. We hope that we can accommodate everyone who braves the January cold to join us. But the meeting room at The Future has room for about 14 people and their computers.
