In the Margins
November 16 & 17, 2018
The O’Shaughnessy presents the Karen L. Charles Threads Dance Project in In the Margins. This show opens the dance company’s 12th performance season. In the Margins features Charles’ exploration of those who often live “in the margins of society” – an examination of implicit bias as experienced by deaf/hard of hearing communities, and women in America.
Threads will premiere a new work, To Hear Like Me, which seeks to bridge the gap between the deaf/hard of hearing community and the hearing community, creating an experience with dance that incorporates American Sign Language, music visualization, and silence within the piece. Guest dance artist Canae Weiss, and ASL interpreters Terryann Nash and Rebecca Demmings, acted as ASL consultants and advisors to help bring this vision to life.
Threads will also perform Femthology – a compilation of repertory works examining the experience of being female. Femthology includes audience favorites, such as Sacred Feminine and Bootyful, that have been reimagined to be more accessible to the deaf/hard of hearing community.
The entire performance will challenge the audience to be more aware of two marginalized groups and their experiences, and to be more empathetic and inclusive of those who find themselves living In the Margins.
There will be a post-show discussion with the audience following the November 16th performance. In the Margins will have open captioning and ASL interpretation for both shows.
Performances are November 16th and 17th at 7:30 pm at The O’Shaughnessy, St. Paul, MN. Tickets: call The O’Shaughnessy at 651-690-6700 or visitoshag.stkate.edu
