Event Details
By now, we’ve all seen the pictures. Cops dressed in full riot gear pointing automatic weapons at non-violent protesters. People of color telling story after story of fear and brutality at the hands of police. Military style weapons being used in residential neighborhoods. Yet another young black man pulled over because he “fit the description.”
Where did this kind of policing come from in our country? How are racism and policing knit together in our history? Learn from legal scholars, historians and activists about the demands to end policing as we know it from the movements across the country. Learn to decolonize your imagination so you can dream a different future for how we build and protect community together.
Join us on Sunday September 25th for an interactive discussion and panel with:
- CeCe McDonald, celebrated organizer who was unjustly imprisoned after defending herself from a vicious and transphobic attack in Minneapolis
- Arif Mamdani, Associate Director of the Kaleo Center for Faith, Justice, and Social Transformation
- Dr. Rose Brewer, Professor of African American and African Studies at the University of Minnesota
- Liz Loeb, community organizer and former national ACLU criminal justice attorney.
In order to make this event possible, we are asking people to contribute a registration fee on a sliding scale ($0 – $50). All funds will go to support the work of community-building and racial justice. Absolutely no one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you can contribute generously, please do, but what we most want is for you to join us for this sacred and necessary conversation.
Childcare will be provided.
This is event is brought to you by: MARCH (Multifaith, Anti-Racism, Change and Healing), MUUSJA (Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Alliance), Jewish Community Action, The Center for Sustainable Justice, The Kaleo Center for Faith, Justice and Social Transformation, First Universalist Church.
