What does it mean for a people to lose their language? How did the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Dakota people get reflected in the erasure of their language? How has that affected not only Dakota people, but all of us, living in the spaces that were once Dakota land, today? Chantemaza (Neil McKay), Dakota language specialist and instructor in the American Indian Studies department at the University of Minnesota, will discuss not only this history but also current efforts to rediscover and use the Dakota language in everyday life. This is the fourth program in our series, “What’s In a Name?” Free and open to all.
