Happy Asian Pacific American Heritage Month!
CONTEXT: May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.
Like most commemorative months, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month originated with Congress in 1977. It was first just a week long celebration, but finally became a month when Congress passed Public Law 102-450 in 1992, which annually designates May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. In Minnesota, the first Asian person noted on record was in Duluth, Minnesota in 1875.
CELEBRATE WITH US: At CAAL, we celebrate this month by uplifting the diverse stories within our Asian Minnesotan population through our #MinneAsianStories campaign.
This year our theme is “This is Home.” We curated a series of stories that capture the vibrancy, resilience, and complexity of our people, and how they are making Minnesota home.
One month is not long enough to honor all of the experiences and contributions of the Asian Minnesota community, however we believe it is an important month to make sure our cultures, histories, and stories are seen and heard.
Stories build and connect people in ways that data and information often cannot. We hope to continue to engage, educate and deepen fellow Minnesotans’ understandings of who Asian Minnesotans are. Come listen to the stories of Asian Minnesotans, check out our brand new exhibit, and pick up a copy of the #MinneAsianStories graphic book!
Please join us again at this celebration to celebrate the diversity and beauty of the Asian Minnesotan community.
