St. Paul, MN – The 5th Annual St. Sahag Armenian Festival will be held on September 15th, 2018 at the St. Sahag Armenian Church in Saint Paul. The family-friendly event features food, cultural demonstrations, informative presentations, and activities for all ages.
The St. Sahag Armenian Festival is the biggest cultural Armenian event in Minnesota. Originally started in 2013 as a small cultural event for Armenian minorities, the festival has grown each year, drawing in nearly 1,000 attendees last year. The St. Sahag Armenian festival is also the only Armenian cultural celebration for Armenian-Americans living in the upper Midwest (North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa.)
Every year the festival attracts some of Minnesota’s prominent politicians and public figures. Among them are St. Paul Mayoral Candidate Pat Harris, Congresswoman McCollum, and Senator Amy Klobuchar, who attended the festival in 2016. Attendees have enjoyed the traditional Armenian ‘khorovats,’ (kebabs made of chicken or pork) and a variety of other delicious dishes and appetizers.
Other activities include cultural presentations about historical and modern Armenia, music and dance demonstrations by St. Olaf students and the Armenian Dance Ensemble, and church tours hosted by Fr. Tadeos Barseghyan, the parish priest. There will also be kid’s activities like face painting, a bounce house, and Armenian related crafts.
Another feature of the St. Sahag Armenian festival is the Bake Sale and Bazaar, in which Armenian confections and baked goods are available for sale along with handmade goods from Armenia.
Armenians have been calling Minnesota their home for over 100 years and have long participated in the state’s history and development, including working on railways and bridges, starting commercial endeavors, and funding philanthropic projects such as Cafesjian’s Carousel in Como Park. Today, Armenians of Minnesota continue to be involved in areas of business, finance, medicine, and community affairs.
