Mandatory Tech Week: October 28-31
Production Run: November 1-11, 2018 at Minnsky Theatre in Minneapolis.
The Play: 1992 Kenya, on the even of the country’s first democratic elections, everyone is brewing with expression, even in the tiny, rural village, Luoland, with no electricity or running water some 250 kilometers northwest of Nairobi. There, although lesbians “don’t exist” in Kenya – two queers fall in love: Awino, from the Luo tribe, and Bobby, an American development worker.
Characters & Descriptions:
AWINO: Kenyan Luo (Black). 20’s/30’s; Assigned female at birth, though very non-conforming in presentation, Awino is large-boned and often appears extremely boyish/masculine.
CHIEF: Kenyan man (Black). Late 40’s to early 50’s but we welcome 20+ to audition for this role; Wears traditional African garb befitting his honored status as Chief and carries a staff-like wooden cane or walking stick symbolic of royalty.
WIVES, RADIO ANNOUNCERS, VIGILANTES: 3 women (Black), 20s-40s, playing multiple characters each
BOBBY: American woman (White). Late 20’s to mid 30’s. Ex-Peace Corps volunteer. Feminine but tough, sarcastic but loving.
20% Theatre strongly encourages disabled artists and trans/non-binary artists to audition for any role.
Payment: The stipend for all actors is $500, payable following the final performance & strike on November 11.
Production Team Positions: We are also seeking the following paid production staff positions: Assistant Stage Manager, Costume Designer, and Sound Designer. Artists of color preferred. Please submit email of interest and resume (if possible) to claire@tctwentypercent.org
Please help promote this opportunity to folx you feel should audition or apply!
