E-DEMOCRACY | Upcoming events in Macalester-Groveland

I want to share some upcoming neighborhood events – there’s a lot happening in the next month. Please help us spread the word!

Transit Forum
Monday, August 27th, 6:30pm
Hillcrest Rec Center Auditorium (1978 Ford Parkway, served by Metro Transit Routes 23, 46, 84 and 87 – metrotransit.org for details)
How does the transit system work for you? What would motivate you to ride more often? How will you connect to the Central Corridor Light Rail? Have you heard about the streetcar study? What is the future of public transit in Saint Paul? Metro Transit and our planning partners at the City of Saint Paul are very interested in connecting with the communities they serve and meeting residents interested in discussing transit in their neighborhoods. We have invited a team of people working on area transit planning and welcome an open dialog about current transit service as well as a few new projects for the future including streetcar, bus connections to light rail, and rapid bus (arterial bus rapid transit).

Speakers include:

  • Charles Carlson, Manager of Transitways Planning, Metro Transit
  • Jill Hentges, Community Outreach Coordinator, Metro Transit
  • Kim Koempel, Transit Facilities Planner, Metro Transit
  • Christina Morrison, Senior Transportation Planner, City of Saint Paul
  • Katie Roth, Senior Planner, Transitways, Metro Transit
  • Scott Thompson, Senior Transit Service Planner

Forum hosted by Macalester-Groveland, Union Park and Highland Park District Councils.

Fall Plant Share
Saturday, September 8th, 9am-12pm
127 Amherst Street
The Beautification Committee of the Macalester-Groveland Community Council invites you to share your extra perennials and garden plants with other gardeners at the Fall Plant Share. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to pick up new plants to diversify next year’s garden while giving your divided perennials a good home! The plant share is designed to be an exchange, though we suggest a $2 per plant minimum donation if you do not have plants to bring. Please call the council office at 651-695-4000 with questions.

Bike/Walk Forum
Wednesday, September 19th, 6:30 p.m.
Macalester College, 1600 Grand Avenue
Old Main, 4th floor (in the center of campus, #22 on the map: http://www.macalester.edu/about/maps/campusmap-large.html)

  • How pedestrian/bike friendly is our community?
  • What can we do to improve it?
  • What is the bike/walk/accessibility plan for Saint Paul and our neighborhood?
  • How can we make intersections and construction zones more navigable for people who are handicapped and/or visually impaired?

We invite you to connect with neighbors and community organizations that are working to make our neighborhood safer for pedestrians and bikers. Join our team of panelists to discuss how walk/bike friendly our neighborhood is and what improvements we would like to see in the future. We encourage you to bike or walk to the forum!

Panelists include:

  • Kristie Billiar and Todd Grugel, MNDOT
  • Steve Clark, Bike/Walk Twin Cities
  • Andy Singer, Saint Paul Bicycle Coalition
  • Tami Traeger, Nice Ride
  • Jessica Treat, Smart Trips

This event is funded in part by the Allina Neighborhood Health Connection.

Fall Neighborhood Clean-up
Saturday, September 29th, 9am-2pm
Ford Plant Parking Lot (966 Mississippi River Blvd)
Cleaning out your basement or garage? Not sure what to do with the stuff you’ve got? Mark your calendar for the Fall Neighborhood Clean-up on Saturday, September 29th. For accepted items and pricing visit http://www.macgrove.org/node/25. We are able to offer a limited pick-up service for seniors and residents with disabilities. Pick-up services will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t delay to sign up by calling 651-695-4000.
Volunteers are needed – all volunteers receive a $15 voucher for the clean-up and free lunch. This is a great way for families, friends, or neighbors to volunteer together! With a variety of jobs (for heavy lifters and people who can’t do heavier work), we’ll find a spot that’s a good fit for you. We are also in need of a few people with trucks or trailers to help haul re-use items to Goodwill at the end of the clean-up. Please let us know if you are able to help! To volunteer, please email callie (at) macgrove.org.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Hope to see you at one of these events!
