DeAnna Cummings: Making a place for hip-hop arts

Print

DeAnna Cummings is the executive director of Juxtaposition Arts, which she founded with artists Peyton and Roger Cummings, her husband, in 1995 as an urban youth-focused visual arts center. In addition to introducing youth to traditional fine art forms and professional development, they are known for a focus on hip-hop infused aerosol art murals. In 2004, they opened a new visual arts center on West Broadway and Emerson in North Minneapolis, and are committed to community improvement and place-making in a project they call “Remix.” Cummings is also the visual arts curator, along with Michelle Spaise for this weekend’s second annual B-Girl Be Women in Hip Hop Summit.
