I have a friend who has Ophidiophobia which is a fancy word for fear of snakes. For years I could not figure out why my next door neighbor would not just help her self to my rhubarb. She loves the stuff but it turns out she too is afraid of snakes and they love to slither through my rhubarb patch. The snake in the photo lives in my neighborhood. A common garter snake who is enjoying the heat of the sun after a cold winter. I live on the river bluff and it is rocky. The snakes like the rock because it is warmer than the soil. It is not unusual especially in the spring and fall to see them on the rocks. They are harmless. They eat insects and are not poisonous and they don’t bite.
Some people are afraid of them. It is a common fear. A few years back a woman bought a home during the winter. When spring came she saw the snakes sunning themselves on the side walks around the house. She could not live in the house, and ended up having to sell what she thought was her dream home. She was like my neighbor and no one knew that she was afraid of snakes. We are all afraid of something. I can’t see myself living on top of a steep cliff.
It is a good idea to know what is in the neighborhood before buying a home.
