As I’ve been working really hard on my upcoming solo show, I finally found the time to carve a press release out of all my nervousness and anxiety. The funniest thing about being a writer is that it is easy to write about the projects of others, but being able to take a subjective stance on your own work is a whole other beast. I’ve lived with this work for so long; as I get closer to finishing every piece, it changes and something new is revealed to me. This press release is my attempt to articulate what I’ve been working toward thus far, and I would like anyone reading this to feel welcome to come to the Smitten Kitten on July 7 to say hello and look at some art.
The Smitten Kitten presents Chimera: A solo show by Amina Harper
The Smitten Kitten is pleased to present Chimera, the very first solo exhibition by local artist Amina Harper. The opening reception will be held at the Smitten Kitten on July 7, 2013 from 7-10 p.m. The exhibition will be on display through August 8, 2013 and is free and open to the public.
About the show
This new body of work attempts to examine the concept of the hybrid. Elements of nature that are not one or the other but are so much more; this concept is not simply apart of nature but is the very core of nature itself. In her new body of work Harper wishes to acknowledge and celebrate the complexities of humanities personal quirks, deepest desires and most cryptic fantasies. Combining Eastern influences with echoes of Greek mythology and classical European painting and sculpture, Chimera’s aim is to express an instinctual awareness of the titillating duality in storytelling. In these stories male is also female, predator can become prey, and goodness is always laced with a dose of evil.
This exhibition also presents an evolution within Harper’s work aesthetically and compositionally. Her draftsmanship has made an incredible shift since her career began in late 2009 and many of the show’s pieces are works in progress. Chimera’s prime objective is to show the audience how far the artist has come and what can be expected in the future.
About the artist
Amina Harper lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she was born in 1988. From a young age she was greatly inspired by the intricate details featured in Japanese animation and that appreciation followed her into a love of Classical Italian sculpture and Baroque paintings. She quickly fostered a love for the visuals of nature while spending many adolescent summers working at The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and learned that, like the dense prairies and the secret gardens, all living things have their sensuous mysteries.
About the space
