Every Tuesday at noon, community members of Corcoran neighborhood gather to participate in the Lideres en Accóin y Poder program. CNO staff member Silvia Perez organizes these regular meetings as opportunities for residents who speak Spanish to come together to learn from experts and from one another. They empower each other to become more informed and proactive leaders.
Crime Prevention Specialists John Reed with Minneapolis Police Department has for the past 9-weeks presented to the group on topics ranging from police investigations and emergency situations to the day-in-the-life of a Minneapolis Police Officer. The current cohort of 13 women and 1 man came together last Tuesday, October 22 to reflect and celebrate what they have experienced through the program.
Minnesota State Senator Patricia Torres Ray also attended to share her history and role as a state legislator. Corcoran participants asked her questions about the challenges facing Minnesotans and the Hispanic community as well as where to seek out resources to advance their work in social change.
Earlier in the year this same group participated in an 8-week informational session about community organizing conducted by Ned Moore with the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) at of U of M.
